Our Approach

We give young musicians the skills to transform the world.

In our refreshingly supportive and collaborative musical community, students blossom on every level. Young musicians take joy in their talents. Gain confidence through hard work. Learn compassion and responsibility. Build deep bonds and reach new heights.

What is Chamber Music?

In this video, young CMC students respond to the question “what is chamber music?”

At the heart of our programs:

    Individualized Attention

Every musician matters in small ensembles. Whether orchestra or chamber music, our programs embody this principle. Individual student needs are addressed by supportive teachers who truly see them and meet them where they are. Through this tailored approach, we are able to develop each young musician's unique gifts and provide a highly successful collective experience.

    Customized Repertoire

Our formation of chamber groups and selection of repertoire is exceptional and unique. Under the direction of Artistic Director Dr. Mary Jo Pagano, the CMC team relies on their vast experience to form groups that take into consideration the range of musical levels, age, personality, and social needs — then hand-selects repertoire to bring out their best. Students learn to perform expansive and exciting masterworks the way chamber music is meant to be played, in which every musician has an important voice and opportunity to shine.

    Rotational Philosophy

In order to offer a diverse and open environment, we implement a rotational philosophy in both chamber music and orchestra. In orchestra we rotate seating so all students have a chance to lead and support. In chamber music we rotate coaches so young musicians become accustomed to hearing fresh ideas and new points of view. Through this shared nature of our instructional system, our faculty are just as collaborative as they teach students to be — instilling a value on teamwork while supporting students from different perspectives to create a successful experience.

    Inclusive Community

Through our community-based, multi-age approach, we offer children and teens the support, friendship, and mentorship that’s so important at these ages. We find young musicians flourish in this non-competitive environment. They build trust, deep bonds, and compassion while working together to create something much bigger than themselves. We also work hard to encourage and reach out to diverse communities so that we can provide all students with the same opportunities to learn, grow, and thrive.

    Collaborative Achievement

We set a high, attainable standard, then coach young musicians to meet it with commitment and joy. The collaborative nature of chamber music informs the entire experience. In small groups, students are motivated to bring their best because their peers are counting on them — not competing with them. Young musicians come prepared and they come together to work on a piece and put their all into achieving an exceptional performance.

    Serious Fun!

Within the work we do, we have a ton of fun! While repertoire and instruction set a high standard and demand rigorous practice, we also select music that’s fun to play, plan numerous performances in a variety of venues (like flash mobs!), and provide exciting new experiences — like collaborations with guest artists and international tours. Above all, we help young musicians to enjoy their talents, expand their love of music, and celebrate their successes in a close community of friends who cheer each other on.
